Happy Father's Day!

Thank you to all the men who are taking their charge as protector, provider, and mentor. It's so important in helping kids feel comforted when distressed is incredibly important to their sense of security, and so is the support they feel from being fathered when they start looking for the world beyond mom’s arms.

Below are some helpful tips for parents in working together with raising your family.

Moms: Support the father figures in your children’s lives with your appreciation and respect. They are not just subbing for you; they are your tag team in keeping your children secure and safe, not just from the world, but in it.

Dads: (biological and otherwise) Turn off your devices and be in the moment with your kids. They need to know, trust and feel the real you. Take your unique role as ‘Securer of Exploration’ seriously; they do.

summer vacation and learning

6/13/2016

Summer break may be only about 10 weeks long, but during that time kids can forget a lot of what they spent the previous nine months working hard to learn. Although some education reformers would do away with summer vacation. I take the opposite view: summer is an important time for informal learning and discovery for children and it allows them to explore and display creativity through nature or in other ways.

HOw to get your child to eat their veggies!

Some pickiness is to be expected in young children when it comes to choosing healthy food choices and that it is perfectly normal for toddlers and elementary school aged children to eat only foods like nacho chips and chicken nuggets. Many parents wrestle with getting their children to eat their veggies.

Below are a few tips from Jack Maypole, M.D. to parents and caregivers that may need help with encouraging their child to have a power-packed meal without disappointing their tastebuds.
  1. Sneak it in. - Cut broccoli in mashed potatoes, for example, or subbing in sweet potato fries as a healthier side dish can work.
  2. Play the dip card. Kids — especially toddlers and preschoolers—love to dip stuff. You may be able to get more passed their lips if you offer small dishes for dipping, such as ranch dressing, ketchup, guacamole or a savory sauce.
  3. Hide it plain sight. I urge parents to portion plates thusly: Place two servings on a plate of a child’s known favorites, such as chicken and rice. Strategically, put a “new,” less-often consumed food on the plate — e.g. peas, or say, kale chips— that should at least be tried. If a child refuses, take it out of the rotation, and re-offer it a week or two later. This exposure may help wear them down or win them over in time.
